UNSW President Ian Jacobs visits Confucius Institute

On 8 September 2015, Professor Ian Jacobs visited the Confucius Institute at UNSW Australia for the first time since becoming UNSW’s President and Vice-Chancellor in February 2015.

President Jacobs was accompanied by his Operations Director/International & External Liaison Ms Shahina Mohamed. They were greeted by a range of staff led by Mr Laurie Pearcey, Director - International Strategy (Greater China & India), and the CI’s Chinese Director Associate Professor Junfang Xi. 

President Jacobs was treated to a pot of freshly brewed oolong tea prepared in traditional style to give him a small taste of China and an insight into Chinese culture. 

President Jacobs discussed a wide range of issues including future strategies to increase collaboration between UNSW and the Confucius Institute’s partner at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. President Jacobs also took the opportunity to learn about some of the intracies of Chinese culture in preparation for his upcoming trip to Beijing and Shanghai later this month. 

President Jacobs expressed a passion for learning Chinese, and in the short time of his visit attempted to master a range of Chinese phrases, from “sneeze” (da penti) to “I love you” (wo ai ni). He also pointed out the significance of having strong links with China, and intends to build on these links in the future.
