On the evening of April 26, the Art Gallery of NSW exhibition talk “一对一 (One on one): a presentation on artworks from Beyond words: calligraphic traditions of Asia” featured six talented students from UNSW. The event was the culmination of a 5-week mentor program established in partnership between the Confucius Institute at UNSW and the Art Gallery of NSW. The students met regularly with the gallery’s Mandarin Language Community Ambassadors to gain an introduction to art and to develop their skills in interpreting and discussing artworks.

Beyond words: calligraphic traditions of Asia showcased diverse calligraphic traditions in Asian art across a range of mediums from the ancient to the contemporary. During this session of short talks, each student explored one particular artefact or artwork from the exhibition, sharing their discoveries in both English and Mandarin.
