Confucius Classroom Opening Ceremony
The Confucius Classroom at Ravenswood School for Girls was officially launched at a special ceremony attended by the Governor of New South Wales Her Excellency The Honourable Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Sydney His Excellency Li Huaxin, UNSW Australia’s Vice-President (Advancement) Ms Jennie Lang and a range of community representatives.
This collaboration marks the establishment of the first Confucius Classroom in a non-government school in New South Wales and the first Confucius Classroom affiliated with UNSW Australia.
“This initiative forms the centrepiece of our wider schools outreach agenda and is part of our commitment to foster linkages between the Chinese language learning experience at school and university,” said UNSW Australia’s Director of China Strategy & Development Laurie Pearcey.
The Confucius Classroom initiative involves the provision of Chinese language learning resources and sourcing of professional volunteer Chinese teachers through UNSW Australia’s joint venture partners at China’s prestigious Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
“Ravenswood has a well established Chinese language program and an excellent community reputation providing many synergies with UNSW Australia’s Chinese Studies program and our Confucius Institute’s standing as a centre of excellence in both China and Australia,” Mr Pearcey said.
The Ravenswood collaboration was finalised less than two months after the establishment of the Confucius Institute’s alliance with three community based Chinese schools in the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area.
